Resignation of the entire State Department?

Fake News is taking this country by storm. We're at the point of true disbelief, the places where we are supposed to be getting the truth are being manipulated by the higher ups. I don't know what news outlet to rely on to receive the truth or at least a faded version of it.

The example of Fake News I decided to focus on was the State Department's senior administrative team allegedly resigning on the Wednesday before January 26. It was said that many officials were not trying to stick around for the reign of Trump. The State Department's undersecretary for management for nine years, Patrick Kennedy, and three of his top officials had resigned "suddenly"; which is not that odd because his retirement was the end of January. These officials were all career Foreign Service officers that have served under both the Republican and Democratic administrations. Also it was said that Assistant Secretary of State for Diplomatic Security Gregory Starr retired January 20th and the director of the Bureau of Overseas Building Operations, Lydia Muniz, had also left that day. With these officials leaving the office, its causing more harm than expected; these offices need to be led by people with experience in the department. This is scaring many especially knowing that Trump was against a lot of foreign policy during the election. This was the information given in an Washington Post article.

The article published by the Washington Post, gave a tainted truth of the purpose of the officials leaving the office. Indeed Kennedy and three other representatives did leave; but the article was misleading. The officials did submit resignations at the start of the new administration, it is standard practice with all political appointees throughout the executive branch of the government. Looked like some bad timing, looking as if they were leaving because of Trump and his administration. However according to Barbara Stephenson, president of AFSA, "Rotations and retirements are facts of life in the Foreign Service - they're how we refresh the ranks and steadily produce a deep bench ready to step in and lead." So now Trump takes office and things that are a "circle of life" in the White House seem to look now like its cause of the new administration.

This article can resonate differently with different audiences. Some people don't know as much about Fake News, but if the truth is the truth. There are people that don't care where they get there information from, as long as they get there information; then others who like validity along with reliability. I feel the fake news is more effective for those who don't know whats going on in politics, or who don't care to know. America right now is at a weird place, and we truly have to pay attention to what is happening around us.

The author ,Josh Rogin, stands by the what he wrote in his article "The State Department's entire senior administrative team just resigned". This article being reported on The Washington Post is almost sad since this is a trusted news outlet. But Fake News will hopefully die down soon, there is always something that seems to take America by storm - especially when someone is new in office.

  1. This particular story fits in with the broader narrative that the transition to this administration has been chaotic and unusual, and that many people have resigned their positions rather than work for a president like Donald Trump. In this case, a process that basically repeats itself with every new administration is being reported as if this one is breaking new ground in alarming ways. Splashy headlines like this one - and please cite your sources properly - can serve as "click bait" for folks searching for news online. When more intensive scrutiny is paid to routine processes, it can create the impression that highly significant things are happening when, actually, everything is pretty normal.

There have actually been numerous cases when appointees from Mr. Obama's staff have publicly resigned so as to make a routine transition from one staff to another is instead portrayed as a mass exodus of dedicated honest professionals who are leaving in protest of the incoming president - when the truth is that this sort of transition happens every time a new president from the opposing party is elected.

There have been other stories regarding the behavior of Obama administration employees and how they've allegedly sought to disrupt the transition. I think this could be an excellent area to examine for our project. Dig deeper into how this phenomenon is unfolding. Good start! Please let me know how I can help!

    1. In case you did not see my other response, I'll rewrite one. This story is a bit more broad I agree with that, many are not enjoying Trump's term so far - we know this; but to accuse staff of leaving because of that is a different approach. I apologize for not citing my sources, I didn't even realize. This article is titled "The State Department's entire senior administrative team just resigned " published by Josh Rogin on January 26, 2017. This definitely is "click bait" though, I am not one that watches the news - which is Ironic because I want to do this as a living. My sources are from social media and the internet, which is probably most other Americans' source.

I did not know that about Obama's staff, that is interesting. It is a part of life, we are never going to stay somewhere forever. Especially with a senior administrative team, majority of these officials are older - retirement is on their mind.

I would probably look more into this about the Obama Administration, because I am slightly curious - this might help extend on my research paper also. But thank you, I feel this is great also. I want to expand on it, even though my second article was under a different branch of Fake News. I'm going to keep running with this, I will ask for help if I get lost.
